For my 40th Birthday, pregnancy baby moon and a family fun vacation, we made a trip to Cancun Mexico with our kids to stay at the Rosewood Mayakoba in the Lagoon Studio Suite (room tour in video). We also arranged a private tour through to the Chichen Itza World Wonder at opening. This was the #1 hotel in Mexico in 2019 and many of my favorite stars like Jessica Alba visited multiple times, so we wanted to visit this resort for ourselves.
The check in experience is amazing! We are taken by river boat to our private dock and our butler welcomed in into our private stand alone room along the lagoon. There were baby moon balloons to greet us, backpacks filled with activities for the kids, fresh guacamole, fruits, and a bottle of Mezcal. The rooms were amazing and I loved how private they are. Our room number was 106, see the video for the room tour.
My husband set up 2 special private dinners for us. The first was on my birthday and it was a private beach dinner lit up by torches. It was such an amazing moment walking up to the dinner. But even more romantic was our private boat dinner at sunset. The first course was given as we started the boat ride and we ate while riding over the mirror still water through the mangroves. We docked while a chef delivered the just cooked main course, and went on our way as the sun went down. Then we the chef appeared at a different dock to deliver dessert. It lasted for 2 hours and we were dropped off at our private dock. Both of these moments are shared in the video.
We always include fun educational experiences for our kids as we believe this type of learning is irreplaceable and great for their confidence. The most memorable was visiting one of the 7 wonders of the world, Chichen Itza and being educated by our tour guide about the significance of the Mayan culture to the rest of the world. We also learned a lot about Mexican culture and searched for the many “Alebrijes”hidden around the resort. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures as seen recently in the cartoons “Coco” and “Elena of Alavor”. Also we got to see the many lagoon animals during the several boat tours around the resort. We were looking for the ant eaters (as that is Amalin’s favorite animal) but the resort staff told us there are shy and hard to find but do live on the resort!
We used our Citi Prestige credit card “4th night free” benefit and made our reservation for 5 nights. The base room is $1200+, so using our benefit at a hotel like this pays off the high credit card annual fee with an extra $850 in savings!
We traveled with 2 kids aged 4 & 2 years old, so we had our apprehensions traveling to Cancun Mexico with the recent news. However, it was a safe and easy experience at the airport. Upon arrival, the Rosewood drivers picked us up at the Cancun airport and it was about a 45min drive to the hotel. And when we left, Rosewood also helped us check in and escorted us to the security check point at the airport.
I was also concerned about the CDC warning advisories about “Zika” in Mexico. We contacted the Rosewood hotel about it and they assured that it was not an issue at all as they use a natural and non-toxic fumigation every morning and night all over the hotel. However, the hotel is on a mangrove forest over water so there were many mosquitos around. They assured us that due to the fumigation and the mosquitos short lives, they are not affected by the Zika virus. Regardless, we were vigilant with the mosquito repellent spray and during the 5 days, neither my husband nor I got bit by a mosquito.
